As he collected the trolley from the stack near the door, Dan risked a glance outside. The street was quiet. That could only mean the authorities had done their job for once, cleared the immediate vicinity of zombies and quashed the ensuing panic.
For the time being, anyway.
Perhaps all the non-zombies had been evacuated to a safe area by now, assuming there were any safe areas left.
Fuck that. Those places will be like high-security prisons. Furthermore, theyâll attract zombies like flies to a sweet shop. He was better off on his own. All he had to do was get his supplies back to his apartment and wait it out. Then he could go find his island and wait it out while the rest of the world reset.
There was enough room in the trolley for six bottles of JD. Perfect. He felt like a clown pulling the damn thing behind him, but it wasn't like there was anyone left to impress. Except maybe Bev. If she was still around. Dan thought he deserved at least a 'thank you' for saving her ass. Or, more precisely, saving her handbag. Heck, she might even throw him a freebie when she realises the world has gone to shit. Or at least a blow job. Dan would gladly accept, too. Providing she hadn't been turned. He was in the midst of a serious dry patch but having his dick sucked by a zombie hooker definitely hadn't been on his 'to do' list when he woke up that morning, and it still wasn't.
Pathetic little basket on wheels full of booze and rucksack full of canned food, Dan was finally ready to make like a tree and leave. Dragging the basket behind him, he picked up his AR-15 off the counter and walked up to the automatic doors where heâd entered.
Outside, something had changed.
Quite a lot had changed, actually. It should be dusk by now, but it wasn't. It was brighter than midday.
What the fuck? That couldn't be right. Unless the fucking Mudslime terrorists had found some way to screw with the natural order of things, too. Or maybe it was the Russians. At that moment, he couldn't rule anything out. If they could bring the dead back to life, changing night to day might not be so far out of the question.
But shielding his eyes with his forearm, Dan was able to deduce that day hadn't been turned to night after all. The entire street was lit up artificially. Not only by regular street-lights, but by some surreal effervescent glow. The effect was a little like that of those huge floodlights used in sports arenas.
Apart from the weird light, the air felt charged, making the hairs on his arms prickle. Something was about to happen, he could feel it, sense it, but he couldn't imagine what. The street was deserted of both zombies and people.
There was a strange whirring sound above.
A helicopter?
That was to be expected given the current meltdown of society. It would either be military
